Edward Lynch
Edward Lynch died on 14th January 1886 at the Swinton Industrial Schools and buried on the 19th January 1886 in C of E plot 1641, a public grave parallel to Westminster Street. He was the second person to be interred in the cemetery. Edward is buried alongside other children from the Swinton Industrial Schools.
As yet little is known of Edwards early life he entered the Industrial School sometime after 1881. His funeral service was conducted by Roman Catholic priest C. W. Woods under the 1880 burial laws amendment act of 1880.

It is worth noting previous burials from the Industrial School if the child was buried in the parish the internment would have taken place at St Peters Church, there is a memorial stone alongside the path at the side of the church commemorating the children from the school. From 1886 onwards any burials from the Industrial Schools that didn’t have a family plot took place at Swinton Cemetery at the cost of the rate payer and not at the cost of the church.

Emma Hesketh died in Eccles on the 19th January 1886 aged 52 and became the third person to be buried in Swinton Cemetery. She is buried in public grave 1206 along with five other people who also passed away in 1886 Reverend Heywood performed the burial service. The grave can be found at the rear of the chapel.
A home address of 3 Gate Street, Swinton was recorded for Emma Hesketh, the house was unoccupied on the 1881 census so the family arrived to the address at a later date.

Baby Margaret Hart just 7 months old was the fourth person to be buried in Swinton Cemetery. Margaret passed away on the 24th January 1886 and laid to rest in C of E Public Grave 1206 which is to the rear of the chapel parallel with Westminster Street. Catholic priest C. W. Woods providing the burial service.
Margaret’s parents were Patrick Hart and Margaret the family were living at 19 Bold Street, Pendlebury. The grave holds six burials, Margaret was the second to be placed in this grave, caring for her is Emma Hesketh who was buried just a few days before.

Elizabeth Critchley
Elizabeth Critchley passed away on the 14th February 1886 and laid to rest in C of E plot 812. She was 50 years of age and was living on Wardley Street Swinton.
The Church of England burial service was performed by Ronald Dunn, Curate of St Peters Church, Swinton. Reverend Dunn I believe studied at Cambridge University in the 1870’s and took up his first appointment in Swinton later that decade where he remained for several years before a move to Cheshire and finally a move to Essex where he married.

Fred Partington
Fred Partington
Fred Partington passed away just two months old on the 20th February 1886 and laid to rest on the 23rd February in grave 793 which neighbours the first burial in the cemetery. His burial service was conducted by Minister Samuel Russell Woodall of the Primitive Methodist Church, Station Road, Pendlebury.
Fred's twin brother Wilfrid died shortly after they were born in December 1885 and is interred in a graveyard elsewhere. Sadly neither of the twins appear to have been baptised although other siblings were baptised before and after the twins in the church on Station Road by the same minister. Fred and Wilfrid were amongst 10 children born to Thomas Partington and Jane (Ramsden) The family lived in and around Pendlebury for many years. Thomas was a Blacksmith, he and Jane are interred elsewhere in Swinton Cemetery, other family members are buried alongside baby Fred.

Beatrice Rooney
Beatrice Rooney was seven years old when she died on the 23rd February 1886. She was buried on the 25th February in grave number 1641. Her funeral service was conducted by Catholic Priest C.W. Woods.
Beatrice was an inmate at the time in the Swinton Industrial Schools, she is buried alongside fellow children from the schools.

Jane Mowatt
Jane Mowatt
Jane Mowatt diedage 59 on the 25th February 1886 and interred in Non Conformist grave NC792 on the 1st March, the grave is very close to the first burial in the cemetery. Weslyan Methodist Minister John Huntington Corson conducted the burial service. Also in the grave alongside Jane are her son George and granddaughter Elsie. Jane originated from Sidmouth in Devon, she married and lived in Taunton for most of her married life.
The Mowatt family moved to 3 Primrose Place Swinton around 1879 from Taunton in Somerset after the death of Jane’s husband William Mowatt. Within a couple of years they moved to Prospect Place, Swinton.
Reverend John Huntingdon Corson. Originally from the Weslyan Methodist Chapel, Irwell Street, Salford. Which was built in 1827. Junction Ordsall Lane and Chapel Street. Had its own graveyard holding more burials than Swinton Cemetery. Closed 1962 and is now a grassed park area.
John, wife Bertha and family later moved to Swinton, both are buried in Swinton Cemetery. On their headstone are the words
‘Erected as a token of esteem by friends in the Irwell Street Circuit’.

Samuel Davies
Samuel Davies
Samuel Davies passed away aged 56 on the 27th February 1886, interred in Non Conformist grave 792 on the 2nd March. Catholic Priest Charles W Wood conducted the funeral service. His sister Alice who passed away a couple of years later is buried alongside him. Samuel lived in Pendlebury around the Newtown area. As an adult he lodged with his older sister Alice who had been widowed at young age. He was employed at the Wheatsheaf Colliery owned by Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd. He was killed in a work related accident.
The District Coroner Mr F Price held the inquest at the Royal Oak Hotel (pub), Bolton Road, Pendlebury on the 1st March concerning the death of Samuel Davies a day wageman 56 years of age of 518 Bolton Road, Newtown, Pendlebury. Employed at the Wheatsheaf Colliery he was in the ‘Rams’ mine at the far end of the workings when a piece of stone some several tons in weight fell from the roof. He was killed almost instantaneously. Some 20 minutes elapsed before the stone could be removed and his body recovered. Mr J. S. Martin, assistant inspector of mines was present during the inquest. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

Walter Frost was just 11 months when he died the 28th February 1886, he was laid to rest beside baby Margaret Hart who had recently passed away in public grave C1206 on the 6th March, his funeral service was performed by Curate R B Harrison of Swinton.
The little boy had been born and lived on Wardley Lane, Wardley, his parents Walter and Jane Frost had the baby baptised at St Marks Church, Worsley on the 6th May 1885. He had two sisters just a couple of years older than him.
